North, South, East or West?Elaine from Regina asked us “Is there a difference in the type of window covering that I choose if my window is north or south facing?” There is a difference because the amount and type of light that comes through a north-facing window is different from the amount and type of light that comes through an east-facing window. How do you make the best choice for window coverings for windows that face different directions? Here’s
a guide: North-facing windows offer the clearest, most consistent light and the coldest exposure. Energy-efficient treatments, such as pleated and cellular shades, are a smart option. East-facing windows offer warm, bright light, especially in the morning. Treatments that block UV rays are a good choice. Consider horizontal or wood blinds. West-facing windows admit the hottest, haziest light of the day. One or a combination of light-diffusing treatments is recommended. Depending on the type of room, a sheer-weave roller shade with a fabric over-treatment might be a flexible option. South-facing windows receive good light year-round, and cast a warm, golden glow on room interiors. Light-diffusing treatments can help protect fabric and furniture. Vertical blinds let you enjoy the natural light to varying degrees simply by moving the vanes.
