How to Install

It’s easier than you think … most customers will be able to install their own blinds and shades. If you do not feel confident installing your new window coverings, contact our Customer Service Desk and we will put you in touch with a reputable installer in your area.

In order to properly install your blinds/shades our manufacturers will provide detailed instruction manuals to describe the many different mounting options that you may encounter.

Before you start installing, collect the following tools that are usually required:

  • Pencil or marker - to mark the placement of the mounting screws
  • Electric Drill - to drill holes for the mounting screws
  • Screwdrivers - both Phillips and flat head screwdrivers will be required
  • Tape measure - for accuracy
  • Level - this is especially useful for outside mounted blinds or shades
  • Ladder - tall enough for you to easily reach the area to mount the top brackets
  • Screws - select the type of mounting screw based on the mounting surface (ie. wood, drywall, cement etc.)

Some general information:
The mounting hardware you received with your blinds or shades was specified at the time the blinds or shades were ordered, based upon your particular installation needs. The hardware may include:

Installation Brackets
(the installation bracket will be different for each type of blind)

Installation brackets are attached either inside or outside the window casement, depending upon whether the shade was ordered as an inside mount or an outside mount.

Spacer Blocks
On outside mounts, spacer blocks are used to project the installation bracket away from the mounting surface when additional shade clearance is needed. Each spacer block increases clearance by 1/2". Use a maximum of three blocks, with the solid sides facing the mounting surface. Check to be sure your mounting screws are long enough for a secure installation.

Extension Brackets
Extension brackets can also be used with installation brackets to allow outside-mounted shades to clear obstructions.

Hold Down Brackets
Hold down brackets are optional installation components used to prevent the bottom of the shade from swaying.

Horizontal Blinds
All blinds come with complete installation instructions for their product. This is an overview for those considering installing the products themselves. The products you purchase may not be installed exactly as described here.

INSIDE MOUNT: Usually box brackets are supplied with most 1 and 2 inch horizontal blinds. These brackets are usually installed in the corner of the window frame. The headrail of the blind is then inserted into the brackets and the bracket doors snapped shut.

OUTSIDE MOUNT: Measurements need to be taken to determine where to install the brackets. Mark the location with a pencil. Install the brackets using long screws, molly bolts or other fasteners if necessary. Install the headrail of the blinds into the brackets and add the valance.

Vertical Blinds
All blinds come with complete installation instructions for their product. This is an overview for those considering installing the products themselves. The products you purchase may not be installed exactly as described here.

INSIDE MOUNT: Usually spring brackets are supplied with most vertical blinds. First the valance is secured in the window frame with a screw, then the brackets are usually installed through the valance into the upper window frame. The headrail of the blind is then inserted into the front edge of the brackets and then rotated and snapped in. The slats or vanes are then snapped in one at a time.

OUTSIDE MOUNT: Measurements need to be taken to determine where to install the brackets. Mark the location with a pencil. Install the brackets using long screws, molly bolts or other fasteners if necessary. Install the headrail of the blinds into the brackets and add the valance clips and then slide in the valance. The slats or vanes are then snapped in one at a time.

Cellular & Pleated Shades
