What to
do with Patio Doors...
I need some
blinds for my patio doors but I don't know which type of blind
will work best and look good. Do you have any ideas?

Lise,
You have hit on a question
that comes up in most households - what to do with those hard to dress but
necessary sliding doors. There are a few practical issues to consider such
as the amount of privacy and light control you need, how often the doors are
used, and how much wall space you have on either side of the window. With
those questions in mind, here are some ideas for you:
 |
1.
Vertical blinds with either fabric or vinyl vanes work very effectively
to provide excellent light and privacy control while allowing only the
moveable door to be uncovered. The soft look of fabric can complement
the room's décor while vinyl vanes may be more practical if you have small
children or pets as they are easier to clean.
2. Pleated or cellular
shades can help to insulate the window and work well if light control
is not a high priority as they can only be raised or lowered (there
are no slats or vanes to tilt). A single blind may be cumbersome to
raise and lower so consider using an easy-lifting continuous cord system
or have two individual blinds manufactured on one headrail. The advantage
of having two blinds on one headrail is that you can raise only the
blind that is covering the moveable door and leave the other blind down.
3. Horizontal blinds
particularly those with 2" slats can provide excellent light control
and can be made with two blinds on one headrail. The wider 2" slats
will be proportionate with the size of the patio doors ensuring that
the look is not too busy. Some horizontal blinds can be manufactured
with cloth tapes which can add colour and hide the rout holes on the
slats.

Lise, I hope that these
ideas give you some direction. I think that the first step is to decide how
the doors will function best and choose a window blind that will meet your
practical and decorating needs.
