Top Ten Window Covering Mistakes To Avoid

1. Reversing width and height when measuring. Width is the side-to-side measurement. Height is the top-to-bottom measurement. The width is always given before the height of the window. For example, an order 72” x 48” would be manufactured 72 inches wide by 48 inches high. To avoid confusion, as you measure put a W next to width measurement and an H by the height measurement. Find out more in our How to Measure section.

2. Not checking the measurements in three places on both the width and height of the window. Use a step ladder or stool to reach the top of high windows. Many windows are not square, so the width should be measured at the top, in the middle and at the bottom. Also check the height of the window in the middle and at both sides. When placing your order use the smallest size of the three measurements. Find out more in our How to Measure section.

3. Putting the controls for the blinds in an inconvenient location. There is nothing worse than finding that the controls for your blinds are out of reach in the corner behind the TV. When you finish measuring step back and look for the most convenient location for your controls. Make a note of it for when you order. You can also order longer or shorter controls for your blinds.

4. Not allowing enough overlap for blinds mounted outside the window frame. To ensure privacy and to stop sunlight from leaking in the side of the blinds, outside-mounted blinds must be larger than the window opening. For a window that measures 72” x 48” on the inside, you might need to order a blind that measures 80” x 54”. But check on the product type - vertical blinds, for example, need more overlap than a cellular shade.

5. Not allowing for obstructions that will hamper the operation of the blinds. The most common obstructions on blinds installed inside the window frame are window cranks and fly screens. We can provide fold down window cranks for most windows.

6. Rounding off your measurements. When measuring for inside-mounted blinds, don’t round up or down, measure to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. The manufacturer will make the appropriate deductions to allow the blind to be fitted inside your window.

7. Choosing the wrong product for the purpose. A sheer type blind might not be a good idea in a bedroom changing area and a blackout blind might not be best for a kitchen window. Make sure you do your homework on what type of custom blind is the most appropriate for your room or situation.

8. Choosing the wrong colour. Colour trends come and go blinds last a long time. You may want to change the colour scheme in your room at a later date, a bold coloured blind might limit your choices, if you don’t want to buy a new one. If in doubt, neutral colours are a safe choice. You can always bring colour into the room with accents and fabric top treatments.

9. Choosing window treatments that clash when seen from the exterior. Some products are the same colour on the back as they are on the front. So the navy blue blind in the family room and the fire engine red one in the room next to it may each look great in those rooms, but they might look out of place when seen from the outside.

10. Ordering from someone else. NorthernBlinds.com designers have years of decorating experience and can assure you of the right product at the right price.
